Who was Lucie Blackman?

Lucie was a very contented child, born on the 1st September 1978 to Tim and Jane Blackman. She happily took on the nurturing and protecting role of big sister to me, Sophie, born in 1980 and Rupert in 1983.

Growing up she loved to spend her weekends sailing, and playing with her siblings and with friends. She most looked forward to summer holidays when the family would go to Dorset to visit cousins.

Despite mucking around in the woods and on bike rides in her early teens, as Lucie got older she rather more enjoyed being girly. She loved painting her nails and putting on make up.

She had a real talent for art and music and spent many hours writing songs and performing to the family. She gained 9 GCSEs despite being very unwell at the time with pneumonia and pleurisy.

Fluent in French, Lucie spent many weeks in France visiting her pen pal. Family holidays were mainly spent in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, or in Mallorca. Her Mum and Dad separated when she was 17 and Lucie continued to live in Sevenoaks with her Mum, me and Rupert. She enjoyed spending time with friends, babysitting and working in a pizza restaurant, as well as going to the gym to keep fit.

After gaining 3 A-levels Lucie applied for a job with British Airways as a flight attendant. She flew short haul routes for a year before starting long haul. Tired with always feeling jetlagged Lucie resigned from BA, with the intention of seeing the world at her own pace.

Her first destination, which turned out to also be her last, was Tokyo, Japan. She flew out on 3rd May 2000 and died 1st July 2000, exactly 2 months before her 22nd birthday.

Lucie was an amazing person. Supportive, kind and friendly, she would make time for all her friends and family. She was a real ‘people person’; she was popular, and intelligent, beautiful and witty. Lucie could light up a room with her smile. She is very sadly missed.
