BUDDYSAFE FAQs

What makes BuddySafe better than traditional personal safety alarms?

BuddySafe is different because it provides as much data as possible as to the whereabouts of whoever has triggered the alarm. The product is uniquely bi-directional allowing the user to discreetly raise the alarm to summon assistance without touching their mobile phone. In many situations, the ability to discreetly raise the alarm can drastically effect the outcome of any given situation and this we feel is the key to its effectiveness.

What does "not-for-profit" mean?

It means no profit is made from BuddySafe child safety service. The money charged is what it costs to operate the service - not a penny more. We don't believe in making a profit from charging parents to protect their kids and we're even giving the Buddy Fob away free because we're totally committed to child safety.

Are there times when the Buddy Fob might not work?

Yes. Your Buddy Fob relies on a Bluetooth connection with your mobile phone. It will not work if:

Your phone is switched off
Your phone's battery is dead (always charge your phone before you go out).
Your phone is out of signal range
Your Buddy Fob battery is dead
Your phone is more than 10 metres away from your Buddy Fob
Your phone has lost its pairing with the Buddy Fob

Can the Buddy Fob be used for anything?

The Buddy Fob is designed as a personal safety alarm that helps you to get to the user as quickly as possible. It can be used for anyone who works by themselves, or who may find themselves in vulnerable situations. There is a version designed for in-building use, and so can be used by companies, public sector bodies, schools, hospitals, assisted housing schemes and many other organisations. Please contact us for more information on this version. If you think one of the Buddy Fob systems will work for you, then it probably will.

Why do I need a Buddy Fob?

When you're travelling anywhere alone, on a night out a BuddySafe fob gives you extra security and protection. Lone workers, children, key-holders, medical and teaching staff and those managing late-night businesses are also increasingly vulnerable to attack. The BuddySafe not only gives the user and those who care for them a greater sense of security and control, but allows the contact and the authorities to deploy quick and effective assistance to anyone who raises an alert. The discreet nature of the Buddy Fob means that the alert button can be pressed without the aggressor realising, so the user's personal safety isn't further compromised.

How does the technology work?

Once the alert button has been activated, the Buddy Fob sends a signal to the mobile phone via Bluetooth. The phone then sends a signal to the Buddy server, which in turn sends alert messages to the nominated contacts so they can quickly and effectively respond to the situation

What happens if it's a false alarm?

When you receive the alert, you can contact the user to verify the circumstances. If the alarm has been raised by mistake, or your employee the user has decided to handle the situation themselves, you, or the Buddy Fob holder can contact Buddy and request that the alert messages are cleared. Only those with a registered user can clear the alarm.

I've heard that location based services which track children via their mobile phones are an infringement on a child's / young person's privacy. Can you tell me how you prevent the tracking feature in BuddySafe from being abused?

Your child's privacy is very important to us, that's why we've built in a number of measures that help keep yoru child's life, private. Your child has full control over the tracking of their mobile phone and can turn tracking on or off with just a quick text message to our system. But of course if they raise the alarm the system automatically switches into tracking mode for the duration of the alert. Once you cancel the alert, our system automatically reteurns the service to its previous state. So if the child's phone was set not to allow tracking before the alert was raised it will return to this state once the alert is cancelled by you.

What do i do if i receive an alert from someone?

The first thing is not to panic. Try and contact the person. If you can't get through , dial 999 and calmly tell the police what is happening. Do not cancel the alert until they are satisfied they are safe as the system will keep tracking them.
