Room security is something that is often overlooked. As well as the risk of safety, figures released in August show that inadequate room security can be financially crippling too, with more than 390,000 students suffering a theft last year.
Mobile phones were the most likely items to be stolen with 20% of students saying their handset had gone missing.
Some 19% also lost their MP3 player and 16% found their television had been taken while they were out.
Digital cameras, computers, video and DVD players, household equipment and games consoles also prove popular with thieves.
Alarmingly, 47% admitted they did not have adequate locks on their front or back doors and 16% said the locks had not been changed after the previous tenants. Check with your university to make sure your accomodation is as secure as it can be, and consider Lifelock to add your own security.
